From Courtrooms to Composting Hubs: Reimagining Our Environment

Richard Wallis’s journey into environmental innovation began in an unexpected place. After a 30-year career as a barrister, a family sabbatical in London shifted his life's trajectory. After noticing an abandoned patch of land at his sons’ school, Richard cleared the area, composting the school’s food and green waste which was used establish a productive school vegetable garden. The initiative was a resounding success—winning a gold medal in the sustainability section of the Richmond and Bloom Flower Show and catching the attention of the local MP.

Upon returning home, Richard was determined to replicate this green success in New Zealand.

The Birth of the CarbonCycle Company

Driven by a mission to address the Climate Change Emergency through local, practical action, Richard set out to design a revolutionary, Kiwi-made composting system. Collaborating with engineers, he created a patented, vermin-proof, labour efficient, and movable compost box system made from recycled aluminium and Northland-grown Japanese Cedar.

What started as a passion project for schools quickly evolved, and keeps evolving. Although the CarbonCycle system is in well over 100 schools, community garden, marae, ECE, shopping malls, Eden Park – the list goes on! Richard and his team are deeply committed to the health of our planet and the strength of our communities. Through consultation, education and innovative systems, The CarbonCycle Company focuses on four core pillars :

-          Building soil carbon and water resilience

-          Improving local nutrition, health and well being

-          Fostering the power and self-reliance, as well as food security, of local communities.

-          Reducing greenhouse gases right from our own backyards.

Come along to hear Richard share his wealth of expertise, discover how local composting can transform your soil health, and learn how we can work together toward a greener, more resilient island community.
